Happy Dhanteras 2016
Dhanteras corresponds to the first day of the five-day-long Diwali celebration. This festival is also known as Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhantrayodashi, which is observed on the propitious thirteenth lunar day of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu Panchang of the month of Kartik that occurs in between the months of October and November. In the word Dhanteras, ‘Dhan’ stands for prosperity and ‘Teras’ refers to the Dhanwantari Triodasi. On the day of Dhanteras Goddess Lakshmi is devoted to offering prosperity and happiness. Therefore, Dhan Teras has a lot more importance for the trading population.
There also exists a very appealing story concerning Dhanteras Festival says that a long time ago the sixteen-year-old son of King Hima was fated to pass away by virtue of a snake bite on the fourth day of his wedding as per an astrologer. On the fourth day of his wedding, his youthful wife didn’t permit him to be asleep. She rested all her ornaments along with many silver and gold coins in a large stack at the entry of her husband’s small private room and lighted a countless number of lamps all over the place. Following this, she went on reading out stories and singing songs.
While Yama, the God of Death came there in the appearance of a snake his eyes got out of the vision by the dazzle of those luminous lights and he could not go through the Prince’s compartment. Thus, he scaled on the top of a stack of the coins and ornaments and sat there for the entire night listening to the harmonious songs. In the tome of the dawn, he silently went away. Therefore, the young wife rescued her spouse from the command of death. Ever since this happened, this particular day of Dhanteras came to be described as the day of ‘Yamadeepdaan’ and lamps are reserved burning all through the night time in respectful admiration to Yam, the God of Death.
In accordance to one more popular story, when the gods and demons shook the ocean for Amrit or nectar, Dhanavantri appeared hauling a jar of the elixir on the particular day of Dhanteras. To celebrate the fortunate day, the homes and business locations are modernized and garlanded. The entrances are turned full of colors with attractive customary patterns of Rangoli designs to greeting the Goddess of prosperity and richness that is Goddes Lakshmi. To point towards her much-awaited appearance, little footprints are drawn with a mix of vermilion powder and rice flour in the house all over. The lamps are reserved burning all throughout the time of dark.
On this day, the Hindu community considers it favorable to buy silver or gold articles or no less than one or two fresh utensils. It is alleged in the Hindu traditions that new “Dhan” or a number of forms of valuable metal are a sign for good luck. The Laxmi-Pujan is carried out in the time of evening when the little Diyas, which are made up of clay are lighted to force away from the gloom of evil spirits. ‘Bhajans’-the devotional melodies are sung to eulogize Goddess Lakshmi. Dhanteras is commemorated with delight and eagerness. Naivedya of the customary sweets is presented to the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. There is a tradition in Maharashtra to calmly pound dried out coriander seeds with jaggery and proposed as Naivedya.
In several villages, the cattle are decorated and devoted by the farmers as they shape the primary source of their profits. In the southern part of India, cows are presented unique adoration as they are believed to be the personification of Goddess Laxmi and consequently they are decorated and devoted on this day.
